Logic nylon leaders

A first-grade rod is worthless without a well-chosen line. However, the leader is the most important part of your equipment, as it determines the elegance of your cast as well as the transmission of energy.

In my years as a fly-casting instructor, and especially as a fly fisherman, I have spent an incredible amount of time getting this part of our equipment right when designing and developing fly tackle. It was very clear to me that this was one of the primary keys to unlocking the door to successful fly-casting and fly fishing. In my opinion, it’s the most overlooked part of the equipment in the fly fishing industry.

Presentation and precision mean everything to a fly fisherman and more importantly, how well the fly moves in the water with the goal of deceiving the fish they are fishing for. In other words, the fly should always have a lively movement when it is being fished.

Logic nylon leaders are tapered according to a profile that I have designed and used for over 30 years. It has truly proven itself many, many times over! These leaders are all produced according to our G&G system. If you know the line weight (loading wt.) and the fly size you are planning to use, then you will be able to pick the right Logic nylon leader for optimal performance.

The Logic leader core is soft, allowing you to make a perfection loop in the butt section for easy changing between leaders. The Logic nylon leaders are now available in 7 different sizes which cover all the different situations that you would need to use a tapered knotless nylon leader for. Please see our recommendations below.

Please follow our line weight recommendations when choosing your Logic nylon leader.

  • Logic nylon leader – for line wt. 28 g/432 gr to 35 g/540 gr.
    (butt 0.67 – tip 0.38  L 5.2 m/17 feet, strength: 30 lbs)

If using small wet flies (i.e. double hooks sizes 6 – 8 and 1 inch plastic tubes) then add 1.0 meter of 0.38 mm tippet material to reach a maximum total length of 6.2 meters.

If using larger wet flies (i.e. double hooks sizes 2 – 6 and ½ inch brass tubes or bigger) then use the leader as it is, so that the total maximum length is 5.2 meters.

Ps. The Logic nylon leader size butt 0.67 – tip 0.38 L 5.2 m/17 feet will also match line weight 26 grams/401 grains in full length with following fly sizes, i.e. double hooks sizes 6 – 8 and 1 inch plastic tubes. If larger wet flies are being used for this line size, the Logic nylon leader 0.38 must be shortened in the butt section by 0.40 meters so the total maximum length is 4.8 meters.

  • Logic nylon leader – for line wt. 24 g/370 gr to 26 g/401 gr.
    (butt 0.65 – tip 0.33  L 4.8 m/15.7 feet, strength: 24 lbs)

If using small wet flies (i.e. single hooks sizes 6 – 8 and ½ inch plastic tubes),
then add 0.60 meters of 0.30 mm tippet material to reach a total maximum length of 5.4 meters.

If using larger wet flies (i.e. double hooks sizes 6 – 8 and ¼ – ½ inch brass tubes or 1 inch plastic tubes.) then use the leader as it is so that the total maximum length is 4.8 meters.

  • Logic nylon leader – for line wt. 20 g/308 gr to 22 g/340 gr.
    (Butt 0.60 – tip 0.30  L 4.6 m/15 feet, strength: 19 lbs)

If using small wet flies (i.e. single hooks sizes 8 – 10 and ¼ inch aluminum tubes), then use the total maximum length of 4.6 meters.

If using larger wet flies (i.e. double hooks sizes 6 – 8 and ¼ – ½ inch brass tubes) then cut 0.20 meters off the butt section to make a total maximum length of 4.4 meters.

  • Logic nylon leader – for line wt. 18 g/278 gr to 20 g/308 gr.
    (butt 0.58 – tip 0.30  L 3.8 m/12.5 feet, strength: 19 lbs)

If using small wet flies (i.e. single hooks sizes 8 – 12 and smaller), then add 1.0 meter of 0.28 mm tippet material to reach a total maximum length of 4.8 meters.

If using larger wet flies (i.e. double hooks sizes 6 – 8 and small plastic, brass or aluminum tubes), then add either 0.40 meters of 0.28 mmor 0.30 mm tippet material to reach a total maximum length of 4.2 meters.

  • Logic nylon leader – for line wt. 14 g/216 gr to 16 g/247 gr.
    (butt 0.56 – tip 0.27  L 3.1 m/10.2 feet, strength: 14 lbs)

If using small wet flies (i.e. single hooks sizes 8 – 10 and smaller), then add 0.60 meters of 0.25 mm tippet material to reach a total maximum length of 3.7 meters.

If using larger wet flies (i.e. double hooks sizes 8 – 10), then add 0.20 meters of 0.27 mm tippet material to reach a total maximum length of 3.3 meters.

  • Logic nylon leader – for line wt. 12 g/185 gr to 14 g/216 gr.
    (butt 0.56 – tip 0.23  L 3.1 m/10.2 feet, strength: 8.2 lbs)

If using small wet flies (i.e. single hooks sizes 10 – 12 and smaller), then add 0.60 meters of 0.20 mm tippet material to reach a total maximum length of 3.7 meters.

If using larger wet flies (i.e. double hooks sizes 8 – 10), then add 0.30 meters of 0.23 mm tippet material to reach a total maximum length of 3.4 meters.
