Salmologic V-Spools

For the last +40 years, fly line manufacturers have produced packaging and spools for their lines that are not very environmentally friendly, nor very useful.  When fly fishermen purchase these lines, the packaging and the spools normally end up in the garbage as waste. I see this as a big problem because there is no reason for the fly fishing industry to create unnecessary waste.

Two years ago, we at salmologic set a goal for ourselves. We wanted to do something about the above-mentioned environmental waste issue. We were already innovative when we introduced the re-usable eLoksak bags as our packaging for shooting heads. However, we knew there was room for improvement, not least when it came to our running lines and WF lines. Therefore, the ambition and challenge for us was to create a new and innovative solution that would work for ALL lines – not just ours.

We invested heavily, in both time and resources, to develop our new all-round salmologic line spool system and packaging – both of which are eco-friendly and help reduce environmental impact.

Our new salmologic V-Spools:

It is useful to have a spool to preserve/store your line on when it is not being used. The average fly fisherman has many different lines for different situations, and most of the time he needs to have a selection of those with him when he is on the water.

We wanted to design a multi-purpose product – one that was ideal for packaging and logistical purposes, yet also useful for the fly fisher, so that it would not end up in the garbage.

Compared to all spools in the industry, the salmologic V-Spools have a much larger inner diameter, a smaller outer diameter, and are slimmer – all to serve several important purposes:

  • Better preservation and storage of running lines/WF lines/shooting heads
  • Easy to roll the line straight on and off without twisting it (very important).
  • Easy to transport – in a pocket on your jacket/fly vest/bag.
  • Prevents the lines from being stressed and allows air flow/”breathability”.

The salmologic V-Spools will also be sold individually, so people have the option to upgrade to our new line storage system should they wish. Your lines will last longer on salmologic V-Spools and it will surely take up less space in your fishing bags.

In summary, we perceive our new V- Spool to be as near perfect as possible – a very practical and useful product made from 100% recycled plastic.

Our new packaging:

All lines come in FSC Certified packaging. FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, a non-profit organization founded in 1993 to protect forests across the globe for future generations. FSC Certified indicates that our package was made from FSC Certified wood harvested from responsibly managed forests.

The new packaging is based on our design and is smaller in size compared to our previous boxes. This means less recycled cardboard material is used and offers us much better logistics when it comes to storage – and reduces our carbon footprint as far as shipping and the environment is concerned, as well.

Throughout 2023, we will start introducing our lines on the new V-Spools and in the new packaging. By season start 2024, it is our goal to use only salmologic V-Spools and our new packaging for ALL salmologic lines. In the meantime, there will be a mix of products on the market available in both our original and new packaging.

It is time to change the age of line chaos, especially now when it can be done with a ”green” smile on our faces.
