The Nordic fly series is designed and developed for salmon in spring and early summer. This is the time of the year when the water level and color can shift on an hourly- and daily basis.
Also, the surroundings change colors relatively fast in spring and early summer, where it goes from darker colors, mainly brown and grey colors, into green and light green colors. The colors can also be very different in the early morning, where there is less light, compared to the middle of the day, where it can be very bright, which again will disappear in the early to late evening. The surroundings really have a huge impact on the colors of the rivers we fish. Therefore, the choice of fly pattern and colors under the varying conditions is of big importance.
When the river changes from brown and grey colors to green and light green shades, we must adapt accordingly. This applies, even if salmon fishing at that time of the year is normally very good. The fresh salmon entering the river are fairly aggressive, so early season is by far the easiest time of the year to get them to take our fly. The “right” fly choice is important, and the rule is still the same…keep the fly invisible and only expose it to the salmon at the right moment. This will make a huge difference.
In my point of view, many fly anglers tend to use flies that are far too big for this time of the year. When the fly is too big it just doesn’t “fit” in and, even worse, they more often than not, “swim and fish” poorly. The medium and large sizes in our Nordic series are as perfect as they can be (based on personal experience), especially for spring fishing for salmon. These sizes can be kept stealthy and not be seen before they are meant to be seen. Fishing a wet fly is all about “being the fly”, seeking the water, adapting to the surroundings, currents, and water columns – as a matter of fact, this is always the rule throughout the whole season.
The Nordic fly series has well-proven fly patterns, that will match all the different “lighting” conditions and watercolorsencountered in the early season. We have written our recommendations for each fly based on my personal experience, and hopefully it can be helpful.
For the fly to “swim” perfectly, I strongly recommend that the hook you use hangs “loosely”. Using a hook guide is by far the best option. Make sure that only the hook eye and knot is pulled inside the end of the hook guide and that the hook guide is not fixed on the tube. When I started using this system myself in the early nineties, I began to hook far more salmon and sea trout – and very seldom lost any.
P.S.: All Nordic flies are tied by a professional Danish fly tier and therefore maintain a standard of high quality, in both material and workmanship.
